What did MEC chairman Capt. Brian Roseen do when he discovered a need for wheelchair-accessible baseball fields in his community? He pulled off a near-miracle, with the help of the Miracle League of Minnesota, a not-for-profit organization which provides opportunities for children with special needs to play baseball.

ALPA is the largest nongovernmental aviation safety organization in the world. Our union has worked tirelessly to always put safety first. And since our inception in 1931, the cornerstone of our organization has been, and will continue to be, advancing the lives and professions of ALPA’s pilots.
Our commitment is stated in the first objective in ALPA’s Constitution—“to provide representation for all members of the airline piloting profession; to promote the interests of that profession; and to safeguard the rights, individually and collectively, of its members.”

Recently, ALPA asked members to submit memories of the first flying experience as part of an ongoing series to help inspire the next generation of airline pilots. Among the many responses we received from pilots across the world, Capt. Thomas Bishop and Capt. Gene McClure shared the moments that helped lead them to becoming an airline pilots.

On this day in 1903, two brothers from Ohio made history with the first powered airplane flight. In the dunes of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Orville Wright took the controls and, 12 seconds later, changed the world forever. Later that same day, Wilbur Wright took his turn and flew the aircraft for nearly a minute, proving that flight was indeed possible.
Today, the men and women of ALPA stand on the shoulders of the Wright brothers’ greatness. In the 112 years since these two bicycle mechanics built and piloted the first powered flying machine, their experiment has evolved into the safest and fastest mode of transportation. For airline pilots, our profession was made possible on December 17, 1903.
