Happy Birthday, Boeing! 100 years ago today, William Boeing formed the Boeing Company in Seattle, revolutionizing commercial air travel and military aviation for years to come. Since its inception in 1916, Boeing has committed itself to the safety and security of the flight crews and passengers who fly aboard its aircraft throughout the world, and ALPA pilots are proud to be an important part of its rich history.

Aviation representatives from around the world gathered in Las Vegas on April 11–12 for the CAPA Americas Aviation Summit to discuss a myriad of issues affecting the global landscape. Much discussion focused on how the United States can maximize international growth, particularly in Latin America and Asia—areas that are ripe for vast expansion. ALPA was also invited to share our members’ views by participating in panel discussions on current aviation hot topics.
In a robust discussion on timely international matters, ALPA executive administrator Capt. Rick Dominguez detailed the Association’s concerns surrounding atypical business models, such as flag-of-convenience schemes that threaten North American pilots’ jobs and their airlines’ ability to compete fairly in the global marketplace. The panel also discussed the advantages and pitfalls that would result if airline foreign ownership rules were relaxed.

This week, the Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Transportation (OIG) released a report affirming the importance of pilot training. Throughout our more than eight decade history, ALPA has maintained that a well-trained flightcrew is the single most important safety asset on any flight. We are pleased that this recent report affirms the importance of this issue to the airline industry.

As ALPA ushers in a New Year, we take a moment to reflect on the achievements of the past year and renew our energy and commitment to realizing our union’s vision for the piloting profession and the North American airline industry. This year marks ALPA’s 85th anniversary. The knowledge and resources forged from eight decades of experience give us the strength and credibility to remain the most influential and respected voice in aviation and to pursue the highest standards of safety, security, and pilot assistance.
In the coming year, our union will do even more to build on decades of work to support our members in every way possible as many pilot groups begin or continue the hard work of negotiating collective bargaining agreements. We'll also keep watch in the year ahead for opportunities to advance labor as a whole.

As world leaders meet for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change this week, it’s a great opportunity to recognize how much airline pilots are working to protect the environment, safely enhance efficiency, limit noise, and save money.
Here are just a few examples of how airline pilots who transport both passengers and cargo fly green every day and on every flight:
