My First Three Flights
At age eight, I was bit by the flying bug after seeing the USAF Thunderbirds perform for the first time. However, I was a senior in high school before I got my first chance to fly. One of my best friends made the McDonald’s All-American High School Band, and his family invited me to accompany them to New York to see him perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The really exciting part of my first flight was that it turned into three flights thanks to the Piedmont Airlines “Hopscotch” fare! We flew from Atlanta, Ga., to Greensboro, N.C., then to Richmond, Va., and finally on into New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Highlights included the first officer showing me around the cockpit in Atlanta, a landing with low visibility and snow on the ground, and then the top highlight: arriving at LaGuardia by flying up the Hudson River past Manhattan on a beautiful day.
I’ll never forget my first three flights!
