We Will Never Forget
Fifteen years after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, members of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l, joined by friends, family, and staff, gathered in the Remembrance Garden at ALPA's Herndon, Va., offices to honor the fallen and illustrate our dedication to advancing secure aviation operations as part of their legacy.
ALPA president Captain Tim Canoll acknowledged, “The agony and enduring sting of those horrific moments ... will never fade from our hearts and our minds,” but pointed out that this memory confirms “why being vigilant is so critical in our everyday lives.” He reinforced our duty as a union to never forget and push forward on issues of safety and security.
“We can only do this with the collective strength of community because although individual efforts are valiant and impactful, nothing can replace the effect of many voices joining together for the same cause,” asserted Canoll. He identified causes such as the installment of secondary barriers, expansion of the Federal Flight Deck Officer program, and continued growth in the Known Crewmember program. “We are strong in our individual passions, yes,” he concluded, “but we are mighty in our collective resolve.”
Captain Todd Insler (United), his pilot group’s MEC chairman, also spoke to the crowd and echoed the call for continued awareness. “Vigilance against evil must never rest,” he declared. “The legacy of 9/11 and the memory of those we lost demands that we heed this lesson every day, on every flight, and ensure our aircraft will never again be used as weapons.”
On this and every year since the attacks, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice on that fateful day the crews of United Flights 93 and 175, and American Flights 11 and 77.
We remember the four ALPA members lost on 9/11: Captain Victor Saracini, First Officer Michael Horrocks, First Officer LeRoy Homer, and Captain Jason Dahl; four extraordinary men still making a powerful impact on the lives of countless others.
